Walking the Walls of York

We had two nights in York, but because we took a full day tour to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (next post), we never actually spent a full day in town. We made the most of the two evenings we did have to explore this very cool city. We arrived around 5pm, but since it stayed light until well after 10pm, we had plenty of time to get started:

We started walking the walls at Petersgate, which is a very lively section that surrounds old town

We came down from the walls at Goodramgate to eat dinner at Ambiente, a fun tapas restaurant that had come recommended:

We ordered some sort of sherry cocktail that was their specialty

After dinner we climbed back up the walls at Monk Bar:

Our post dinner walk was perfectly timed to catch the golden hour of light

This section of the walk had great views of the York Minster and pretty gardens all around

We jumped off the wall here for the night and started to head back to our guesthouse along the river Ouse

After our Yorkshire Dales tour on Sunday, we hopped back onto the walls, hoping to finish the loop:

There were fields of wildflowers all along the wall

This section of the wall was not nearly as scenic

At one point, the path left the walls and took us past Clifford's Tower, the last remaining part of the castle William the Conqueror built in York:

We followed the path and made it back to the walls:

Walmgate Bar is the only section of the wall that still has its original Barbican (and also gate house and portcullis) 

At this point it was getting late and we were getting hungry, so we decided we had seen enough - maybe we'll get back to that last section of wall someday!
