We woke up in Ste. Sault Marie and decided to just hit the road, grabbing a quick breakfast at Tim Hortons on the way. We did not stop much the first day, making it to Sudbury by dinner. We had vaguely hoped to see the Dynamic Earth museum and see a nickel mine tour, but when we got there the kids were lukewarm on the idea (and the tours for the day were sold out, as it turned out), so we spent a little time exploring the (free) outdoor exhibits, which included the Big Nickel, for which Sudbury gets its nickname (it was created for the bicentennial and was originally part of a whole numismatic park):
After dinner, we drove on to North Bay, where we planned to spend the night. As we approached, we stopped off to hike Duchesney Falls, which had been recommended. We took only the shorter hike to the East Falls, but they were pretty and quiet:

The next morning, we spent a little time looking around North Bay before heading towards Ottawa. On the way, we stopped for a short hike at Eau Claire Gorge. We followed signs from the road, and it was much farther by car over much more rugged terrain than we expected. Arriving, we found it completely deserted and the trail somewhat overgrown (but still usable). It was pretty, but the bugs were intense and the children did not enjoy the insistent buzzing around them:
On the drive back out, we stopped for a look at this lake and waterfall we had passed on the drive in, decided it was actually prettier than the hike:
After another brief stop at Mattawa to look around, we drove as far as Petawawa for lunch (which we had from a food truck in a minimart parking lot -- there was not much around. The samosas were delicious -- definitely homemade!):
We made it to Ottawa in the late afternoon and spent a couple hours exploring before crossing the river into Quebec, where we stayed the night in Gatineaux:
